OUR NAME

12.19.2017

We've played music for years. The first time we sang together was a thrown-together college covers gig in 2004. It was pretty bad. But, not knowing any better at the time, we forged ahead.

We continued to sing and play together in different bands with different friends. We eventually dated. We eventually broke up. We eventually dated again and tried making a record together in the process. We got married and kept playing music, learning how to blend our voices, instruments, stylistic tendencies, and influences.

As we worked on our upcoming record with our producer, Andrew Osenga, we started to see that we were on the cusp of a new chapter. And that chapter meant a new name for a new band. We brainstormed and tried on names like outfits, most not making it out of the dressing room. Some got paraded in front of others for their opinions, a few even got purchased and then returned when we realized that they looked cute in the store but didn't fit well once we got home. At long last, we settled on a name for this new era.

As we tossed Wild Harbors around, it took on different connotations and imagery, which we liked. They are words that aren't ordinarily paired together. If you're curious, these are a few images and ideas that surfaced as we thought on the words and investigated their meanings:

HARBOR, noun.

1: a place of security and comfort : refuge

2: a part of a body of water protected and deep enough to furnish anchorage

HARBOR, verb.

a : to give shelter or refuge to

b : to be the home or habitat of

WILD, adjective.

1a : living in a state of nature and not ordinarily tame or domesticated

3c : going beyond normal or conventional bounds

d : indicative of strong passion, desire, or emotion

5: characteristic of, appropriate to, or expressive of wilderness, wildlife

6a : deviating from the intended or expected course

The territory we're headed into is uncharted, and it's both intimidating and exhilarating. Harbors are places you leave and places you set out for. They can be places of safety or places you get tied to for too long. They can run deep. The waves are calmer there, but open seas with rougher waves are crossed to reach them. As we travel, we want to be harbored in the right kinds of places.

Leaving safety behind this year has been one of the most important things we've done. Something inexplicable had held us back from taking many of the conventional next steps for a life - buying a house, having a child, taking on higher levels of responsibility and power at our jobs... All the while, a passion for what was happening through our music grew and grew. And here we are, changing course from the expected.

So, we are Wild Harbors. We are seeking port in places that may not be tamed or perfected. They may not be easily reached. But we're setting sail from any harbors of complacency and fear where we've been tempted to remain.

Thank you for sailing with us this far. We're excited to see what's in store.
