ALONE TOGETHER

We all approach the idea of marriage with different fears and expectations.

Some people worry they'll never marry and that they'll spend their life alone.

I don't remember if I thought about that much either way - the marrying or not marrying. What I feared was getting married and spending my life alone in spite of it.

That's the picture I had to go on that scared me the most. People who shared a house and a last name but still felt desperately lonely.

In the early years of our marriage, older folks would ask how long we'd been married, and while some were sweet, others would get a wearied, pompous expression and say "Just wait until you've been married as long as we have." Indicating that it would get worse. The newlywed bliss would fade. We wouldn't be so excited about being together.

As a culture, there is a trend of loneliness in recent years that spreads past marriages. Families, friends, colleagues - more and more of our relationships are happening online. Social media lets us see what old high school classmates and best friends alike are doing. We can send texts to anyone in seconds. Our society is more connected than it's ever been. And yet, we're lonelier.

Studies show it. The quantity of our communication is not increasing the quality. Our relationships are progressively more shallow and less satisfying. Our desire to be known has not lessened, though, and so we spiral toward depression and isolation.

This song is the newest to join our previous two singles on our first EP, Monument Part One. The song is our declaration that we want more than that.

We don't want a marriage that means we're legally entwined but leading separate lives. We don't want friendships that merely consist of likes on a website and surface compliments and small talk questions. We don't want families who take pride in blood ties but don't really know each other at all.

We don't want to be alone together.

"Alone Together"

I’ve heard everybody talking I’ve heard that the worst is yet to come They say we won’t even notice They say it’s a matter of time They say we’re two birds singing in a cage in a coal mine I don’t wanna be alone together I don’t wanna be close like stars side by side, my love, but still a million miles apart I’m not scared that you’re gonna leave me I’m scared that you’re gonna stay And you’ll be alone with your memories And I’ll be alone in my mind And we’ll be those two birds singing in the cage in the coal mine I don’t wanna be alone together I don’t wanna be close like stars side by side, my love, but still a million miles apart I don’t wanna spend a life pretending Tied together and tired of A neverending story of us Ever falling out of love

I don’t wanna be alone together I don’t wanna be alone together I don’t wanna be alone together I don’t wanna be alone

I don’t wanna be alone together I don’t wanna be close like stars side by side, my love, but still a million miles apart I don’t wanna spend a life pretending Tied together and tired of A neverending story of us Ever falling out Of ever falling out Of ever falling out of love
